I Kardia Thymatai / Η καρδιά θυμάται

He was washed ashore onto a beach near Nafplion following a brief squall. On arrival at the hospital he was diagnosed with amnesia. When he recovered from his injuries, he found a job, a home, and became involved with a local teacher. He hadn’t recovered his memory and he didn’t even know his real name. One day a stranger knocked at his door. He couldn’t see what she looked like – neither her age, nor her height, nor her dress – for from the moment their eyes met, he became lost. Her eyes were the dark blue of the open sea and, as he stood there gazing at them, an unbearable nostalgia flooded his soul… “Andrew, don’t you remember me?” asked the strange woman with blue eyes. “I’m your wife.” A little later he learned that their marriage had fallen apart and that they lived as strangers under the same roof. His mind remembered nothing from his old life, yet… his heart remembered…

Τον ξέβρασε αναίσθητο η θάλασσα σε μια παραλία του Ναυπλίου μετά από ένα τοπικό μπουρίνι. Στο νοσοκομείο διαπιστώθηκε ότι πάσχει από αμνησία. Μόλις ανάρρωσε από τα τραύματά του, βρήκε δουλειά και σπίτι, και συνδέθηκε ερωτικά με μια δασκάλα. Αλλά δεν είχε ανακτήσει τη μνήμη του, δε θυμόταν ούτε το όνομά του.
Μια μέρα χτύπησε την πόρτα του μια άγνωστη. Δεν μπόρεσε να δει πώς ήταν – την ηλικία της, το ύψος της, το ντύσιμό της· γιατί μόλις αντίκρισε τα μάτια της αισθάνθηκε χαμένος. Ήταν σκούρα μπλε σαν το ανοιχτό πέλαγος και, καθώς τα κοίταζε καθηλωμένος, μια αβάσταχτη νοσταλγία πλημμύρισε την ψυχή του…
„Αντρέα, δε με θυμάσαι;“ του είπε η άγνωστη με τα μπλε μάτια. „Είμαι η γυναίκα σου“.
Λίγο αργότερα έμαθε ότι ο γάμος τους είχε ναυαγήσει και ζούσαν σαν δυο ξένοι κάτω από την ίδια στέγη. Το μυαλό του δε θυμόταν τίποτα από την παλιά ζωή του.
Αλλά η καρδιά θυμάται…
